01Valldemossa

Even though this is a very busy place in summer, it is worthwhile wandering around the steep streets of Valldemossa, with its stone houses decorated with flowerpots. An atmosphere that inspired writers like Jovellanos, Rubén Darío and Santiago Rusiñol  as well as many other artists. You will find a trip to Costa Nord interesting, an interpretation centre which covers the Sierra de Tramuntana through the figure of Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria, the owner of several estates in the region and the author of an exhaustive work on the islands, The Balearic Islands described in words and pictures; you will also be able to see a reproduction of the Nixe, the nobleman’s mythical yacht, and consult the programme of exhibitions and concerts. The Cartoixa, or Carthusian monastery is the focus for a large part of the municipality’s history; one winter its cells accommodated the romantic love of Polish musician Frédéric Chopin and the French writer George Sand. Stop at a bar or bakery to try the sweet, spongy cocas de patata typical of the village.

02Viewing platform route

A long, attractive, circular hike that enables one to follow in the footsteps of Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria, a traveller and scientist who was enamoured of Mallorca. The nobleman had a network of paths built along with viewing platforms so that travellers could stop and gaze on the best scenery of the north coast. Almost secret, barely-used pathways, with giddy views of the sea.

03From Caimari to Lluc

On the outskirts of Caimari is the start of the cobbled path that for centuries has linked the village to the spiritual heart of Mallorca: the Lluc Sanctuary. The route cuts through a landscape of terraces dotted with ancient olive trees, with stretches that run through old holm-oak forests. The path, which forms part of the long distance GR-221 trail, enables one to contemplate impressive enclaves, such as the dramatic Salt de la Bella Dona.

05Dins Santi Taura

This project by chef Santi Taura aims to dignify – even more – Balearic recipes, produce and gastronomy. A space located inside his restaurant in Lloseta that presents traditional cuisine from a personal perspective: the main ingredient of each recipe is “Km 0”, or local, with particular attention paid to seasonal produce and the optimum point of flavour. Santi Taura cooks his daily recommendation – which is not revealed until it is time to taste it – in front of diners.
